Srping 2009:

March 26, 2009- Teaching Academy special session for FFPs on "Entering the Academic Job Market". Facilitated by Wendy Crone and Matthew Capdevielle, this session aims to provide FFPs and their guests with an overview of the academic job search process, including specific advice about: targeting your search for the best results; preparing effective teaching and research materials; navigating the interview process with confidence; negotiating terms of employment successfully. In addition to getting valuable guidance from Teaching Academy faculty mentors, registered participants will receive a free copy of The Academic Job Search Handbook. The event will be held from 3:00-4:30pm of March 26th, 2009 at Room 259 Educational Science Bldg.

February 5, 2009 - Teaching Academy Discussion Series: “Digital Storytelling---- What is Digital Storytelling and how can I use it in my teaching?" Led by Cheryl Diermyer, DoIT Department of Academic Technology, Margart Nellis, Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, and Christopher Blakesley, PhD Student, School of Education, this session will include presentation and demonstration of storytelling as an effective teaching methodology; how story can be used to engage students with course content and meet course objectives and essential learning outcomes. Discussion will be encouraged throughout the presentation.

Fall 2008:

October 30, 2008 - Teaching Academy Discussion Series: "The role of teaching in retention and promotion. A panel discussion with faculty and staff who serve or who have served on tenure review and staff promotion committees. Participants include David Kaplan, Educational Psychology; Harry Brighouse, Philosophy; Laurey Martin-Berg, French/Italian; Regina Murphy, Chemical and Biological Engineering; and Paula Jarzemsky, Nursing. In addition to sharing their insights, our panelists will be answering your questions. This event will take place in room 8417 Social Science from 4:00 - 5:30.

Thursday, November 20 - Teaching Academy Discussion Series: "Teaching the next generation of teachers: how do we provide our graduate students with teaching experience and training?" Presenters include Sandy Courter, Director of the Engineering Learning Center; Robert L. Jeanne, Department of Entomology; Janet Batzli, Biocore; Katy Swalwell, TA in Curriculum and Instruction; Linda Brindeau, TA in French. This joint-presentation will be a showcase of a variety of programs, strategies, collaboration for our UW graduate students, and it will be held from 4:00 - 5:30, 259 Educational Science.

Winter Retreat

The 2009 Winter Retreat was succesfully held from 8:30am-12:30pm of January 16th, 2009 at Lathrop Hall. Its theme was "Engaging the Diverse Classroom". Though it was the coldest day of this winter, still more than 40 colleagues across the campus joined us in exloring the question "What can I do in my classroom to create a welcoming teaching/learning environment for all students?" This Retreat was a highly interactive workshoop, providing multiple perspectives on diversity in the classroom and opportunities to think about implementing changes in our own teaching. The students' voices, in particular, was very provocative and warmly welcome.
