Is multi-tasking possible?
Submitted by Carole Turner on Thu, 05/21/2009 - 10:23Cognitive scientists out there: is multi-tasking really possible? Can we really pay attention (listen) while we write and read? Instructors talked about looking out at a sea of students and laptops in their classes. Are those students paying attention? What ARE they doing?
Laptop Etiquette
Submitted by Kathy Christoph on Thu, 05/21/2009 - 10:07In the symposium session on large lectures Thursday, there was conversation about laptops in the classroom. Following are two on-line resources that may be useful in considering laptop use and may be helpful as a resource for classes:

Aaron's question: Best Practices in Teaching
Submitted by Sarah S. on Wed, 05/20/2009 - 14:18In the keynote address Aaron talked about some teaching best practices, and gave us examples of these practices on our campus.
These best practices were:
- learning in context
- group-based learning
- increased time on task
- increased frequency of feedback
- positive classroom climate
He then asked us to share with our neighbor examples of activities that use these best practices.
Let's continue this conversation and share our examples!!!

Feeling more connected?
Submitted by John T. on Wed, 05/20/2009 - 09:54The Symposium has barely begun and already I feel more connected to the people sitting in these rooms and walking these halls. It seems that the conversations here, online, are a bit more substantive that those that typically take place between sessions.
Is anyone else feeling more connected?

Twitter Backchannel
Submitted by Meagan on Wed, 05/20/2009 - 08:20Hey folks - would you like to extend your conference experience? We're going to be using #TeachLearn as the tag for a twitter backchannel.
If you've never done this before, you use your twitter account (www.twitter.com) to "tweet" your status. By adding a searchable tag (hash mark w/ tag - in this case #TeachLearn), anyone can do a search for it and see what people are talking about.
AAC&U Survey Data
Submitted by Jeff Henriques on Wed, 05/20/2009 - 08:05We should share these results with students at the start of a class as part of our explanation for the activities and goals of our courses. I'm struck by a recent conversation with Tom Ambrecht about the value of making course goals and rationale clear to students at the very beginning of a class, especially when we are changing the dominant paradigm in the classroom.
Welcome!
