Go Big Read: Contributing to a Campus Vision through Your Teaching
his year UW-Madison implemented its first common book project using Michael Pollan’s book In Defense of Food. Participating in a common reading project can help students to see universal connections within and across curricula. At the same time, it can be challenging to incorporate a common text or materials into your specific, disciplinarily-bound course. Come to the Delta Roundtable to hear Chancellor Martin talk about the vision behind the common read program. What are the benefits and challenges to using a common text rather than one you selected yourself? And, what is the unique role that instructors from engineering, math and the natural and behavioral sciences can play in the common read program? Through discussion with colleagues, explore ideas as to how you might incorporate this and future common read books into your work.
Although it’s not required that you have read Michael Pollan’s book to take part in the event, Delta does have complimentary copies available. When you register, you can request to have a copy sent to you.
